Client Objective

Rehabilitate a failing 8-inch ductile iron forcemain experiencing repeated failures during Northern Michigan's six-month cold-weather season without disrupting service or requiring extensive excavation through frozen ground and a busy intersection.

Overview

Advantage Reline successfully rehabilitated 2,750 feet of 8-inch wastewater forcemain using Primus Line® Medium Pressure technology. The 1983 ductile iron system was completed in just 36 hours of lift station downtime through two strategic installation pulls, one 400-foot section and one 2,350-foot section, using only three access pits. The project restored reliable wastewater conveyance for a system serving a critical region along a major shipping route.

Challenges

This municipality manages both water and wastewater systems with infrastructure as old as 100 years. The forcemain was experiencing repeated failures during the region's six-month winter season, causing emergency repairs at the worst possible times.

The pipeline ran beneath a busy intersection and residential area with roadways and driveways directly above. The distance between the lift station and discharge manhole made traditional excavation impractical and highly disruptive. The aging ductile iron pipe required careful surface preparation to ensure proper adhesion and long-term performance of the rehabilitation system. The project needed to be completed efficiently to minimize service disruptions during the critical winter season when failures were most prevalent.

Solution

Advantage Reline partnered with municipal operations staff, who managed lift station bypass and access pit construction. The team completed comprehensive surface preparation of the ductile iron host pipe to ensure optimal adhesion and installed 8-inch Primus Line® Medium Pressure material with two fittings through two strategic pulls: 400 feet and 2,350 feet. Working through only three access pits, the installation took just 18 hours.

The trenchless approach eliminated excavation through frozen ground and avoided disruption to the busy intersection and residential area while maintaining service continuity.

The project delivered a complete rehabilitation with only 36 hours of total downtime. The jointless, flexible Primus Line system eliminates seasonal failures and provides a durable solution rated for 50+ years of service.

Based on this success, the municipality plans to use Primus Line to rehabilitate multiple waterline bridge crossings as part of its water system resiliency program in the coming year.
